Multicast & Moblock

If you are using Moblock, and also trying to enable service discovery on your linux machine with Avahi, you probably need to unblock “24.0.0.0/24″. It solved my problems…

That’s all :-)

Basically, if you watch you will see your machine trying to make outbound connections to an IP like 24.0.0.22, probably on port 5353. This isn’t a virus or malware, this is multicast, and its OK.

Open Space Technology

During a release “kick-off” at work we tried out Open Space Technology, which is a simple way to take a group of people and get them jamming on some ideas. It worked out pretty well, even if the organizational elements of the effort seemed a bit kooky to us.

Check it out.

Broken arrow? C'mon!

I imagine leaving wasn’t always an option.

All of the exit signs in this particular cold war nuclear shelter have broken arrows in them. I wonder if this is someone’s idea of a joke.

“Broken Arrow” refers to an accidental event involving nuclear weapons but without a risk of an outbreak of nuclear war. (wikipedia). It also refers to a mediocre movie release in 1996 starring Christian Slater and John Travolta as well :-)

The Cold War or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Depressing.

My trip to Diefenbunker yesterday really has me thinking about how close the world came to destroying itself fairly recently. This kind of thing… a briefing format/outline for how to tell the higher ups that we’ve been attacked with nuclear weapons just blows my mind.

I went out to Diefenbunker, which is where Canada’s leadership would be hanging out if were were attacked with nuclear weapons during the cold war.

There is something about the contrasting angles in this shot that I love.
